I expected so much more from this story. It was predictable, and it pained me to read it. So why did I finish it? I always have hope that a story may turn around and surprise me. That didn't happen. But the main reason I kept going was that I could not believe a book would be published with SO MANY GRAMMATICAL ERRORS. I have no problem with a typo or error here or there, but I was so distracted by them, I started highlighting the mistakes. It became my own annoying entertainment. I figured I could get my money's worth out of my purchase. I did.

the friend request charles soto 9781463588496 Books Reviews

I couldn’t bring myself to finish reading The Friend Request. It was overwritten, hard to understand, and contained many grammatical errors. I’m disappointed, because the premise sounded promising, and the story line was somewhat interesting. It was nice to see the inclusion of a special needs child, and I would have like to see how he contributed to the story.

I don’t believe in beating a dead horse (as the saying goes) so I’m just going to give a short overview of what I didn’t like. I’d like to take a moment to say I only made it through chapter 2, so it’s possible things improved later in the story.

It’s very overwritten. I think Mr. Soto was trying to utilize flowery language, but The Friend Request reads, in my opinion, like he looked up one (or more) of those descriptive words for authors lists and tried to fit them all into the book. This makes it very difficult to follow the story. I found myself re-reading sentences two or three times trying to understand what was being said.

There are also serious grammatical errors and some misspellings, although the misspellings are far less frequent than the grammatical errors. About half of the grammatical errors stem from the previously mentioned overwriting.

I will say that the dialogue was significantly easier to read than the narration. If Mr. Soto had written the entire book in the style he wrote the dialogue, it would have been a much easier, and more pleasant, read.
Out of all the second-chance romances that I have read, this is up there as one of my personal favorites. On , many people say that the book has many grammatical errors. However, the new version has be re-edited, and the story has actually been fleshed out!

I think the most confusing part of the story to me was about Chase’s company.  The governor of California accused him of trying to racially profile his employees. Chase never really denied or affirmed these allegations, so I could not tell if his character was actually in support of or against these policies. I just ended up ignoring that part of the story so that I would not become even more confused, and it wasn’t that hard to do so.

Other than that, the rest of the story flowed smoothly. This story emphasized the fact that sometimes people need to do some growing up before they find love. Chase was immature in high school, blaming Carly for an accident, and tried to turn the school against her on the basis of a lie. Carly was loving in high school, but they were not going to work out after the incident.

Chase thought that he would never be able to have a child, but with Caleb, he was able to have a son to call his own. This improved the story for me, seeing Chase and Caleb’s relationship grow. The romance was also so sweet, as they deal with their pain from past relationships and heal together. I do wish that Chase had cut things off with Heather completely before continuing his relationship with Carly, but I also understand that he was unable to do so. This was what made this second-chance romance successful, the love between Chase and Caleb and the personal growth of Carly and Chase’s relationship.

The pacing of this book is generally fast, even though it slows down at some points. There were no editing errors that I noticed, as this is again the updated version of the novel. The world-building is average, but it didn’t have to be that detailed since it is a contemporary novel.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of second-chance romances.

I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
Too predictable
pretty predictable and not great in keeping my interest. I read it through hoping it would improve, but it never did. Sorry...I wanted to like it but...
The story is good, but the editing is non-existent. If you can get past the errors, it's a nice easy read. His character development is great! Fun read for a rainy day!
This was a great book which was an easy read and kept me hooked. I was surprised at how many grammatical errors there were though. Next time this author should have a few more people proofread before publishing it. I would still recommend reading it though.
