Delderfield never disappoints anyone who loves stories of the English countryside and its people. This is volume one of three, and they are all absorbing and worth reading. Very briefly, it is the life story of a young Englishman wounded in the Boer War who returns to England looking for somewhere to settle. The resulting story of the lovely valley and estate he finds and the characters on that estate is sometimes funny, occasionally sad and always a compelling story of life in the early1900's. This is not a book for those who prefer fast paced writing; but, for those who enjoy a well-told, in-depth chronicle of one person's life it will not disappoint.

I read this book and as many others as I could find by the same author many years ago. I could not get enough of his books. My old paperback editions of the book are long gone I was pleased to be able to accumulate the entire three book series as Daily Deals over a period of time. I am doing the same with his other books as they appear. I don't know when I will get around to re-reading them, but it makes me feel good to have them
I thought the writing was very good. The author did a wonderful job describing an idyllic, pastoral life in turn of the century England. It was very long, but I don't mind that because it gave me a chance to get into the story and the characters, which took me longer than most books.

The author's writing was very descriptive, but sometimes went on too long, taking some of the impact out of a particular scene. He loved to write pages and pages and pages of descriptions of the foliage, weather, sunlight, clouds, smells and sounds, etc.

In particular, I liked Paul at the beginning, but disliked him at the end. He seemed too have lost his edge and complexity as the story progressed. I liked the character of Ikey. I liked Uncle Franz and would have liked to see more of him.

I really liked Grace and felt that her fire and spirit were portrayed as a character defect and mental disability. I did not like Clare who was a characature of everyman's idea of the perfect little woman. The woman behind every great man.

This book reminded me of the Mitford stories which portrays a sweet and cozy community of interesting but good hearted characters.

While I have complaints, for the most part I found it a delightful book.
I've read this trilogy, "A Horseman Riding By" so many times I've had to replace my original copies. And I first read them as library books a couple of decades ago. This first book of 3 is difficult to find now and I balked at the price but it's been at least three years since I read it and it's time. I'll be more careful with it this time!
I love the characters and the region it's set in, I love rural England and the extended family of characters, all so well drawn, always touches my heart. The description of WWI was really the first I'd ever read many years ago and I see from other histories and novels I've read since that it is spot on. It's a slow build at points but always worth it, with twists and turns, complex characters and overall a steady pace.
Long Summer Day by RF Delderfield is the first of a 3-book series known collectively as A Horseman Riding By. I saw the original BBC Masterpiece Theatre 1978 version and decided I would like to read the book.

We follow the Squire of Shallowford, Paul Craddock from his recovery of injuries sustained in the Boer War to his purchase of his Devon Estate.

The book is lyrical, long and lovingly written, something to be savoured, not rushed through. It borders on being a pleasantly romantic portrayal of pastoral England. Delderfield's writing is brilliant in many places but occasionally I found myself impatient with the slow pace. Other times, I was thoroughly immersed in the stories of the Squire, his marital circumstances, acquaintances, servants and the many tenant farmers. The characters are very well drawn, so that even with a huge cast of Valley dwellers, you aren't left feeling confused. Partly, this is because the author uses repetition widely in his narrative. I appreciated this fact, but other readers may chafe at this.

Squire Craddock is a young man with old fashioned ideas and and a well defined sense of justice. We have an in depth view of the every day workings of the estate, the transition to the modern era of motor cars and telephones, politics and the suffragettes.

I will certainly want to continue the saga of Shallowford in the 2 following books. While not exactly fine literature, anyone drawn to England in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries will find much to enjoy in Long Summer Day.
Long Summer Day is the first of three volumes in Delderfield's A Horseman Riding By saga. It begins the story of Paul Craddock, his family, and the many tenants of the large estate Paul buys after being wounded in the Boer War. The book captures both the "long summer day" England experienced in the years leading up to WWI, as well as the societal tensions of the early 20th Century, as the Victorian Age reluctantly gave way to the Edwardians. I read, and then re-read, this book many times over the last 30 years or so, and it was always one of my favorites. This is not an easy beach read, but rather a take-your-time book to be enjoyed over many evenings, a chapter or three at a time. Delderfield's language is rich, and he makes the landscape as much of a character as the diverse people in the book. My only regret is that the map to which I repeatedly referred in the paper edition is absent from the edition. If you enjoyed Delderfield's Swann saga or To Serve Them All My Days, you'll like this one.
